What kind of changes does a police department usually make to their cars when they take them out of service and sell at auction?? I know they usually take out equipment and lights, but what about the chip?? Do they reprogram it or just take it out? I have what used to be a detectives or higher ups car, it didn't have any lights, antennas, or equipment mounting done to the car, so I wonder if I still have a chip?!?! How can I find out?? If I don't have one, where can I get one?? Thanks.

As long as it's a P71, everything is built in and no one changes anything. The equipment is all they take out. If the VIN# has P71 in it it's still aPolice version.

so... what is the mysterious police interceptor "chip"?? Is there a chip that handles the performance?? Or is it a myth??

It's actually the PCM that changes the shift points a little later and a little in running for perfomance. The P71 also usually has a different gear ratio in the differential for take-off, so the mileage isn't as good as a civilian model.
