Deteriorating Gas Filler Tube

Put the snow tires on yesterday and noticed that the gas filler tube has lost a lot of the black coating and the metal underneath is rusty and feels thin if I tap on it with a fingernail. Is there something I can spray over it for now until spring or should I just get it replaced before it springs a leak? ...or maybe the metal tube is going to last longer than I think it is (2001).

Re: Deteriorating Gas Filler Tube

We don't get rust around here so I can't help with that but if you're concerended, I'd replace it. In the winter it's not so hot so there's less apt to be a fire if it leaked though. If it did leak, it would start by seaping and you'd get a check engine light.
