Distributer question

Working on a 1986 Grand Marquis motor (in a different application)

Fresh rebuild on the motor, putting the distributer in the motor and it stops about 1/16" away from going all the way down. Makes a distinct thud when it does.

My question is could I have put the oil pump shaft in upside down?

What could be causing it?

Re: Distributer question

If I remember correctly, the shaft is the same on each end. Try turning the shaft a little with a socket and see if it drops in.

Re: Distributer question

the side with the slip goes toward the top when installing that oil pump shaft... here is a pic of a bad one as an example of the slip washer...

Re: Distributer question

If the shaft is put in upside down, it can pull out of the pump when you pull the distributor and you'll have a hard time getting it back in. There's a slip ring on the top to keep it from pulling out of the pump if it's put in right.
