Distributer question

Working on a 1986 Grand Marquis motor (in a different application)

Fresh rebuild on the motor, putting the distributer in the motor and it stops about 1/16" away from going all the way down. Makes a distinct thud when it does.

My question is could I have put the oil pump shaft in upside down?

What could be causing it?

If I remember correctly, the shaft is the same on each end. Try turning the shaft a little with a socket and see if it drops in.

the side with the slip goes toward the top when installing that oil pump shaft... here is a pic of a bad one as an example of the slip washer...

If the shaft is put in upside down, it can pull out of the pump when you pull the distributor and you'll have a hard time getting it back in. There's a slip ring on the top to keep it from pulling out of the pump if it's put in right.
