I have a 1982 Crown vic LTD with 76,000 miles on it. When the motor is cold it runs fine but once its warmed up it will NOT idle in gear. It WILL idle in N or P but as soon as you put it in gear it will die. WHen you come to a stop sign or light it will die if i dont put it in N before coming to a complete stop. I have changed the plugs but it did not change anything.

Change the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve.

It does not have Fuel injection it has a carb and that is stock for this year.

what engine size? the 5.0L or 5.8L?

It's possilble the Overdrive clutch is hanging up. After it gets warm.(before driving) drive it in D instaed of OD and see if it still dies. Those clutches cn hang and Its like a stick shift when you stop without putting the clutch in.
