Engine Surges

I just purchased a used 2002 Crown Victoria LX and I am thoroughly enjoying driving it. However, I have noticed when I start the car the engine goes through cycles of high idle then back to normal idle, even when it is warmed up. I haven't noticed this when I put it into gear, only when in park. Any ideas on what is wrong? Thanks for your help.

Re: Engine Surges

Check for vacuum leaks. Try turning off your climate control and see if that stops it. . . it may be your A/C kicking in.

Re: Engine Surges

97GM is right, first thing to check is for vacuum leaks, if you don't find any try replacing the throttle position sensor, still does it? replace the Idle air control valve. Most likely the TPS, had the same problem with my 96 Bronco, new TPS fixed it instantly. Good luck

Re: Engine Surges

@97gm - Vacuum leaks.... gotcha. I also thought about climate control after I had posted this message. Duh me.

@351Windsor8 - Vacuum leaks, Throttle Position Sensor, Idle Air Control Valve.

I will start with simply turning off the climate control and eliminating problems as I go. Thank you, gentlemen for your advice. I appreciate ya'll taking the time to respond.

Re: Engine Surges

It was the climate control kicking in and out. I wasn't aware that it cycles that quickly in and out.

Thank you for your time and advice, 97gm and 351Windsor8.
