Cars been doin this for awhile now, once I start it up (both cold and warm), the idle drops really low (but the revs bounce back to normal idle while it does it) and it struggles to stay running, and every now and then it dies. It blows black smoke out the tailpipe when it does this, so I know its dumping in way too much fuel. I'm thinkin a coolant temperature sensor or something, telling the engine to put in more fuel that it needs. Any clues? If so, this shouldnt be a too expensive fix? seeing that I'll be doing it at my shop.
First thing you should do is check your error codes. The computer can have codes stored even if the check engine light is not coming on.
Second, check the fuel pressure at your schrader valve on the fuel rail. It's possible your fuel pressure regulator has gone bad and you're getting way too much pressure at your injectors.
I like to start with the simple things first....since it's EFI, and blowing black smoke, you'll want to have a good look at the Oxygen sensor(s).
