Factory Manual Prices Getting Out of Sight

After I bought my 2000 Crown Vic (used) I purchased a workshop manual and a wiring diagram manual from Helms. The total was $195.00 with shipping. I really haven't needed them until now when I went to look for the information on trouble codes. Now I find out that this isn't included in the manuals that I have and in order to get it I must purchase the Powertrain Control Emissions Diagnosis manual for an additional $180.00.

I know that it's expensive to produce these manuals, but to have to pay almost $400.00 for a set is absolutely ridiculous. I suppose this is another scheme to make you take your car to the dealer for service.

Man, the OBD-II codes can be found online for free. Also, I would search on ebay for the factory manuals. They're always being sold on there used for a fraction of the cost. You can also get CD manuals online which are a much cheaper alternative.

Re: Factory Manual Prices Getting Out of Sight

It's not so much the codes themselves, but descriptions of the various sensors, theory of operation, troubleshooting help, etc. I've looked (and purchased) aftermarket manuals/CD's and I've never found any that I was impressed with.

If you can recommend some, I'd appreciate it. The last CD I purchased was from Alldata and while it had some good information, it was difficult to find and some of images were of very poor quality.
