A Florida sheriff has sued Ford Motor Co., charging that the fuel tank design for patrol cars creates a serious risk of fires and explosions in rear-end collisions.

Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris filed the class-action lawsuit "on behalf of all counties, municipalities and other political subdivisions within the state of Florida which have purchased or leased Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors."

The county's fleet of about 200 patrol cars hasn't had a problem yet, the sheriff said. Chief Deputy Fred Cobb said, "We ought not to wait around for someone to be killed or seriously hurt."

In June, Ford vice president Susan Cischke said the company is working with Arizona officials to address safety issues in Crown Victoria Interceptors. Two police officers in that state were killed in rear-end collisions.
