i picked up a CHERRY 93 grand marquis the other day, it is burgundy with flawless black leather interior and it has 160k. It runs and drives good, the previous owner was an old man who took good care of it. i got it for $1600

however, i noticed that when i get on the freeway my check engine light always goes on. it will go off after i reduce my speeds. I also noticed that the transmission had a small flareup in the 3-4th gear but it hasnt happened since.

any idea whats going on? any things i should look out for?? the check engine light is bugging me and i dont want to pay a dealer to diagnose it.

also, is there anyway to moniter RPM??? its got all those cool features like gas mileage calculator but no RPM gage?? its running good too, im getting around 18 mpg which is better than i expected for a v8.

BUMP!!

i also just found a small clicking noise coming from my engine when i hit the gas. car is still driving normally, im putting alot of money into my Accord so i havent had time to put work into the grand marquis

any ideas?

update on the problems if anyones reading

after a few weeks driving, the only problem is the CEL

it ONLY comes on when im on the freeway going over 50mph for about 10 min. it goes away as soon as i hit surface streets. nothing seems to be happening though.

the tranny also shifts hard into overdrive on the 1st time. after that theres no noise from it. kinda weird, later this week im getting the coolant system serviced and maybe look at some other things

I had a similar problem not long ago in my 92 mgm..heard a clicking from the passanger side...turns out there is a flex/vacum line that runs off the head on the passanger side of the engine that runs to a vacume line under the intake..mine was rusted blowing in toward the firewall causing the ticking I was hearing...actually more of the classic ford CLICK a CLICK when pulling out...patch it up and all is well.

my check engine light always goes on and then goes off after i get off the freeway. car is not burning anything or overheating. it runs fine but this damn light always goes on. sometimes i drive for 20 miles before it goes on, somedays its on after 2 miles

Mine does that sometimes. I find that it happens most when the oil gets a little low. check and double check the oil....mine burns a little.

Allot of times on early 90's Fords, the Check Engine light would go on and off on the highway and the cause was apparently an O2 Sensor issue. It sounds odd, considering the car would run fine but this happened often. Hope this helps you.

My CEL used to go on and off. The dealer traced it to a loose gas filler cap. Replaced cap, CEL went away.
