If you've got grinding going on in any ball joint, tie rod, drag link, or idler arm, you're way past the point of grease solving the problem. Grease is only a temporary solution at this point. However, off all those components, the one most likely to make a grinding or creaking noise is the idler arm. If it does have a grease fitting and greasing makes any difference in the sound, that's your problem. But don't lull yourself into thinking that it's fixed. Replace it.
