sorry i lied to get you in here but please read!

i just joined the forum today looking for parts but i need some advice on buying a 2002 cvpi. it has 200k fresh paint and thats all i know at the moment im going to check it out tomorrow so i want to know the things i should ask and look for.any thing helps but i know nothing about these cars.except theyre the best bang for the buk i can think of. o yeah the price is 1k nothing to whine about but i would be pissed to be buying a motor in the next few months.

Wow, 200,000 miles on a 5 year old car? I'm guessing this was a highway patrol unit, not a city cop, huh? The highway units are usually excellently maintained, but there's a good possibility it's been beat on, also.

That said, though, Crown Vics are highly durable vehicles, and will stand up to a lot of abuse. Just check it over like you would any used car; not a whole lot of stuff out of the ordinary that you need to watch for.

My dad bought a '96 about a year and a half ago with 202,000 miles on it and it ran GREAT. As long as they've been maintained, these cars will go forever.

For only a grand you can't really go wrong. Worse case scenario, you go to a salvage yard and replace the motor or tranny down the line.

UPDATE EVERYONE!!!!!

well i got the car today it is an 02.266k.the trans feels good and its a the motor stutter like it wants to go but seems like lacking power but will go hard if i get on it i was playing on the way home and the damn check engine light came on could this be from needing a tune up? any un obvious advice would be great.the previous owner said it sat for awhile so im guesing tune up.also the steering seems to stick but the alignment is great.tacky paint job but clean i guess jet black.ill check the motor tomorrow would post pics but its late.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it! Sounds like it is in need of a tuneup. Spark plugs would be the first thing to do. Wires you don't need to worry about since the newer 4.6s are coil-on-plug, so there aren't any wires to replace. If that doesn't take care of all the missing, you're best off getting yourself an OBD-II code reader (probably 30-40 bucks) to read the codes. It'll tell you which cylinders are missing. Those coils do go bad now and then and with 266,000 miles, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if one or two are bad. They're about 50 bucks at your local auto parts store.

A tune up is probably a good idea, but get the codes read to know what you're dealing with exactly. No need for guess work. Any Autozone will read the codes for free. Congrats on the new ride and good luck.

well i got the codes read and its a misfire in the #8 cylinder but it only acts up when i want to play.and also the steering seems to get stuck anyone know where to lube it? i am in love with the car and its not even at 100% pics are coming i promise but i cant find the damn charger to my camera.

The steering could be related to worn ball joints and/or a worn gear box. Check the u-joint on the steering shaft as well though.
