I have a 1997 Grand Marquis, and it is approaching the end of its live at 222,000 miles. I want a newer one, but want to stay with the rear wheel drive car. I think the newer models are Front WHeel drive, are they?
If so, when did they switch?

I could be wrong but i don't think they switched to front wheel. The only major change is the newer ones (05 & newer) might have a uni-body type construction instead of the body on frame like yours
the new Grand Marquis and fleet available Crown Victorias are still body on frame with little variation in terms of changes since the Panther platform was introduced in 1979. you can take a newer style Panther suspension and adapt it to workl on the older 80s setup.
