go down 3/4 of the way till you get to the LTD FA (1973-1976), forth paragraph:

"Most people assume that the LTD name was derived, as for the U.S. equivalent, from the term Limited, in fact it stands for Lincoln Type Design and was a measure of Ford Australia’s aspirations for the car. Once again, a two letter code was used to differentiate the models".

anyone else still wanna say im wrong?

Thats the closest thing to evidence we have come accross, but whos to say 'Sandy Mercer' is right.
Guess we can take it as fact untill proven otherwise.

That's the thing. There is an Australian book reference cited in another part of the forum which supports Lincoln Type Design, but many of the web ones can be traced back to a couple of places. Another forum member has an American book that says it's Luxury Trim Décor, which sounds sensible. Finally, the people (including myself) who think it's Lincoln Thunderbird Division don't know each other, so they must have all independently come up with it. These can't be traced back to any one web site, so one just has to wonder how we are all thinking the same.—JY

I will have to go dig the reference out again but this was discussed in another much older post and it was certainly originally something like "Lincoln Town Car Design" but was later also officially promoted as meaning "limited" by Ford.

Some one must have access to the relevant 1965 edition of Road & Tack or Motor Trend or Consumers' Guide when the first Galaxie LTD was released in USA and the name would have been explained then.

My magazine collection starts in 1970 so it not much use here although my memory from when the LTD was 1st released in Australia was "Lincoln Town Car Design" was thrown around in the press but with my memory "Lincoln Type Design" is likely what it really was.

Next time I go to the Battye Library (Western Australian's historic reference library) I will see what I can find in old newspapers etc of the time.

There must be similar libraries in the States so someone over there needs to clean the motor oil of their hands and pay a visit to a library as well.

One of my books here (Automotive Reference - A New Approach to the World of Auto Related Information GJ Davis 1989 Whitehorse Boise, Idaho) also suggest it is a corruption of LDT which stood for Landaulet which at least fits to the extend that one more modern (esp UK) meaning of Laundaulet was a luxury body built on a base model chassis (exactly what an Aussie LTD is). However, I think they were guessing as well as no source was quoted and they were not limiting the LTD use to Ford.

Well mate when i worked for Ford Australia is stood for Lincoln Type Design, and for that fact it was the same in the US. If your first post was going to be a fact you may as well get it right.

Barrett-Jackson said it stood for Lincoln Type Design also,but,a friend of mine said it stood for a "Load of Trash from Detroit,I guess you can safely assume that he is a General Motors fan.
