Mass inspection fail
Took my '96 P71 for inspection yesterday and the guy tells me as I pull up....it failed already because he thought the exhaust sounded too loud.....there was a piece of stainless pipe welded behind the second catalytic on the driver's side and a flex pipe installed in the same spot on the passenger side because there was rot there.....the car's exhaust is closed and not leaking anywhere....had it jacked up, checked front to back. Hooked it to the machine and it coded not ready (long story of finding a short in the OD switch---battery was disconnected). Here is my gripe can they fail it because they THINK it sounds too loud to them. When the car is sitting at idle you can't even hear it, step on the gas and it sounds pretty much like any police cruiser........if the exhaust is stock and closed can they really fail it? If so, how do I make it more quiet? Oh and the guy even referenced it to say i was louder than a regular crown vic...but regular crown vics exhausts are different than the police counter parts...to start with they are single exhaust. As for the not ready code...I have access to a OBDII code scanner and i coded before the flex pie was put in....after that no codes.....so there and again can they fail it if it passes the computer emissions test?
