Merc GM rear wheel bearing recs

Am replacing rear wheel bearings in 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis 5.0 - 200K +. Found wear on right axle and wonder about which brand of bearing to buy among extended bearings offered.

I ask this because I replaced one on my JD loader and it disintegrated within a week. Do not wish this to happen at 70 mph on Interstate with Mercury.

What happened to inner bearing races anyway? 200K is a reasonable outcome for a wheel bearing, but replacing axles is nearly impossible for these older models.

I see a shim kit advertized on some Ford rear ends. Is this an option for bearing replacement without shop work?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest Currie Enterprises. They can make you an axle shaft if they don't already.

Currie Enterprises - Rear Ends, Jeep Parts, 4x4 Parts, Ford 9 Inch Rear Ends

Hope this helps.

Re: Merc GM rear wheel bearing recs

Thanks for the reference. Currie had axles and more at what seem like good prices. Everything one could want for outer drive train parts.

They also had packages with Timken tapered bearings with inner races, an improvement over Merc design.
