confused More $$$ More Problems

Seems like my car knows I got a new job...Driving home from work today, I'm driving a steady 38mph and all of a sudden the car shudders, the dash started beeping, temp gauge and fuel gauge shot straight to hot and full for a split second, then everything went back to normal. This took about 2 seconds for it all to happen and go away. About a mile down the road it did it again, this time driving at 30mph...this happened 2 more times before I got home. Thats 4 times in about 20 minutes. Never did this before today. Any suggestions?

Re: More $$$ More Problems

Sounds like a connection problem somewhere. When they're intermittent, they're hard to find. All you can do is wiggle things around to see if that shows anything.

Re: More $$$ More Problems

I'm wondering if it could be in the ignition... On most cars, when you first turn the key forward(before the car starts), the dash chime sounds, and the gauges go to full then back to where they actually should be....thats the same thing thats happening while I'm driving, and perhaps maybe the shudder is the car actually shutting down for a fraction of a second due to a bad ignition component or connection??? Does that make any kind of sense or am I crazy?

Makes sense to me, that's a place to start.

Re: More $$$ More Problems

Try wiggling the key in that area with it running and see if it does the same.

Re: More $$$ More Problems

Tried wiggling the key and nothing happened. I wiggled, jiggled, pulled, and pushed with no results. Not really sure what else I could do to test that theory, short of tearing it all apart. I'm gonna poke around at it again tomorrow and see if I can figure something out, but if anyone has any ideas in the meantime, please share! Thanks guys

Re: More $$$ More Problems

Low voltage can cause odd problems. You might want to have your battery load tested and check the alternator. Make sure the connections are clean as well.

Re: More $$$ More Problems

Battery and alt. tested good... This morning on the drive to work, I made it approx. 9 miles with no issues...all of a sudden the dash tone sounded, temperature spiked and dropped, engine stumbled hard, and the TRAC light came on and stayed on. Did this again a mile up the road, but this time I lost all control over the throttle and the brakes were very stiff and the engine was surging up and down like someone was pressing and releasing the gas pedal repeatedly. I managed to get off the road into a parking lot and shut her down. Fired it right back up and everything was normal again. It did all that again another mile up the road. Shut her down and fired her back up again and managed to make it the last 2 miles to my job. On the way home I stopped and had the CEL scanned AGAIN at auto zone and only got P0420- Catalyst efficiency low bank 1(I've been getting that code for the past year). Doesn't seem to me that its related to my issue(s).

A co-worker suggested a coolant temp sensor, but I don't see how that would affect the traction control system. Any thoughts?

Re: More $$$ More Problems

Sounds more like you might have either a loose connection on your PCM power relay, or it might be failing altogether. What year is this?

Re: More $$$ More Problems

2000 Marquis...141k miles on the original 4.6. Where do I find the PCM power relay and how do I check it? Luckily I just bought a beater 91 Dodge Dakota, so I still have something to drive, but I can't really drive that with my lady and our 19 month old daughter...kind of a tight fit, so I still want to get this taken care of asap.
