Re: My grand mark is suffering from the dreaded water in engine!

Thanks for posting the photos - I have a much better understanding of that particular engine, and can see how coolant can easily enter the crankcase & mix with the oil. What a mess! Glad you were able to find the problem - with that kind of a leak, you're lucky you didn't overheat it, too.

Re: My grand mark is suffering from the dreaded water in engine!

Great news! I finally finished it. The engine runs smoothly absolutely no problems. Not even the check engine light turns on. I am so exited, now I can use it as transportation to the university.

Re: My grand mark is suffering from the dreaded water in engine!

I read this back in the day after searching the web for frost plug issues. My 95 MGM was experiencing antifreeze in the oil. I have 130,000 miles on it and I have not experienced many major issues until now.

In this particular case, the oil light coming on was the only sign of a problem at first. After pulling the cap and dipstick, there was sludge and foam...aka antifreeze. I changed the oil and noticed the fluid level was low, so I kicked it back up. On my test drive, I noticed my vehicle was beginning to overheat, so I dumped in more antifreeze thinking it was being lost externally.

The additional fluid ended up going through the frost plug (pinhole sized) and into the timing cover and down to the pan. Eventually, this circulated back up the PCV valve and almost down to the air intake. At this point, I shut down the car and it has been out of service while the engine was taken apart.

My dad and I took off the timing cover and did not see any sure signs of a frost plug. Everything looked in place until we took off the tensioner and put the system under pressure. At that point it became clear the frost plug had a pinhole in it and was blowing antifreeze right on out.

So now I am waiting for the weekend to repair...

Needless to say, this is not a well documented issue on many forums so I am compelled to share my photos [upload failed]. It's time to install the new ones this weekend.
