Newbie here. Tranmission filter replacement questions

Hello, I just bought a 2001 grand marquis. I did have a 93 stang and 98 town car, but sold them. Anyways my question about the 2001 grand marquis...I am wanting to do a bit of preventative maintenance, and am now looking at replacing the transmission filter/tranny fluid. My mechanic said 1.5 hours to replace it, but said it's really easy and I should do it myself. I am errie about this because of working on a transmission. My mechanical knowledge is mediocre. I do the jobs that can be done without a pro. I was wondering what is needed for a change (as I am in a rural location), and can this be done relatively easy, as well as is there some website that has a guide to this?
Thanks in advance guys.

oh yes, one more question related to this. does the 2001 grand marquis come with a transmission cooler and if not is this a good idea to get done at the same time?

Re: Newbie here. Tranmission filter replacement questions

If you're mechanically inclined you can easilydo it yourself. Just take the pan off, fluid will run out in a pan siza area so be prepared to catch it all. Inside, the filter just pulls out. The seal sometimes stays in the hole and you just pry it out. If the fluid hasn't been changed before, you'll find a white plastic plug in the pan. Just toss it. It's used during assembly at the plant. On the 2001, there's a plug on the torque convertor. Pull the rubber plug and rotate the engine until the plug is accessable. It takes about 10 ½ qts of Mercon V. Put 7 qts in before you start it, then put more in until it's full. Don't worry about the cooler.
