Noisy Lifters?
My 1988 Grand Marquis is a fairly high milage unit, having about 190,000 miles on the original drivetrain. I have noticed (ever since I purchased the car early last year) that the engine seems a little noisy at idle. It almost sounds like a rattleing of some sort, perhaps caused by noisy lifters. Most of the ford engines I have experience with are older, 351-C's or big blocks, and they never made these noises. The car seems to be more noisy at idle and the noise disappears when the car revs up or when driving. It also seems to be more apparent when the car is started cold.
Is this something to worry about or is it normal? Do these cars have roller lifters and could they be the noise? I have never owed a car with roller lifters, but I know several people with GM 3.1L V6's that have roller lifters and they are very noisy. Any advice would be great! Thanks.
