Hi all. I think I've got an oil leak on my 2000 CV police interceptor but am having trouble locating it. The engine is definitely losing oil at a slow rate, and often I can smell burning oil coming through the vents when I'm idling at a stop.

I'm very familiar with 5.0's and their propensity for leaking oil out the valve covers and onto the exhaust manifolds, but I'm new to 4.6's. Are these things prone to leaking oil in any particular spots?

I can't comment specifically about your engine (I'm use to the 5.0 litre engines as well), but logic tells you this:

If you can smell burning oil through the vents, oil is definitely leaking externally, and getting on something hot enough to burn off (like an exhaust manifold). The fumes then get picked up by the blower motor & vent system. For most engines, I'd suspect valve cover gaskets first. But don't rule out simple things like sensors (such as oil pressure sensor) that screw into the block.

I was thinking the same thing, so I checked both valve covers and the exhaust manifolds but couldn't see any evidence of a leak there. I think this weekend I'll crawl under the car to take a look at the motor from a different perspective and check out the stuff in the block like you said. Thanks for the reply.
