parking brake operation?

Can someone enlighten me to the operation of the parking brake please? I haven't got an owners manual yet, so need to know how it is supposed to operate.
Does it press down and lock down? how does it release? ...........
Thanks.
Andy.

Re: parking brake operation?

Sorry! Its a 1990 country squire.
Reason I ask is that the pedal doesn't stay down. If I press it down, I can feel increasing pressure (but no ratchet sounds) then there is a bang and it all goes loose and comes back to the top.

Some investigation needed here I think! Interestingly, the brake warning light is now on permanently

Andy.

Re: parking brake operation?

The park brake assy. is probably worn or the latch or spring is broken. Look under the dash where it's mounted and you should be able to see the latch mechanism. Some had a vacuum release too. Doesn't it have a handle that says "Park Brake"?
