problem filling fuel tank

OK this has happened twice in 3 months or so. When filling the tank from about an 1/8th of a tank, it won't fill completely. The gas pump cuts off well before the tank is full. I'm thinking a vapor emissions problem but should i look at the canister or a sensor up under the hood? I searched the forum and looked back to March and found no similar posts.

BTW this is a 2000 CVPI with 89,000 miles

Re: problem filling fuel tank

I have the same problem, most gas stations I go to it constantly kicks the pump off, sometimes I have to trickle it in and it takes forever. Does anyone know what could be causing this. It seemed to start when I overfilled it one day, and has gone on for the past 4 months.

Re: problem filling fuel tank

I can't say for a newer Crown Vic, but I know I complained to my uncle (ford dealership mechanic) that my old 88 would kick off the pump every few seconds so you had to hold it - He told me, and I'll quote him the best I can remember "Ford just fu*ked up when they designed the fill tube, all the panther's for the last 20 years have similar problems on and off depending on when/where the fill tube was made"

I finally found a station with either the fill speed or the nozzle bent just right so it fills the tank w/o stopping while I clean my windows, so I just get my gas there now :)

Re: problem filling fuel tank

under the trunk where the charcole canister is for your evap system their is a soleniod/valve that opens and close's when you start and shut off your car, if it is stuck your tank does not vent right when you fill it, thus your gas has to go in slow or the pump kicks off. Check to see if that valve has voltage going to it and if is working, take it off clean it and a simple bench test with a 12volt source will soon tell you if it is working or not! my 2001 P-71 had the same problem.

I sometimes have that problem with my '06. If you pull the nozzle out a little so the rubber spray gaurd isn't flush with the filler opening, it will vent a little better.

That's the trick that works! Just pull the nozzle out 1/2" or so and you'll be fine. Smaller, earlier made toyota cars that had 90 degree bends in the fuel filler tube had this problem real bad (as space was at a premium). Would have never thought that it was a prob on the CVs.
