Re: Project 1990 country squire resto/modification

Core plugs installed

I removed the oil pump pickup and screen to check for blockages.

Clean as a whistle!
Masking the block for paint

Gone red at last

I'll start putting it all back together the next few days.
Andy.

You're going all out! This will practically be a brand new car when done.

Re: Project 1990 country squire resto/modification

wow andy. I just came across your blog today, nice job with your project. i grew up with a car like that, except it was grey instead of white, and it had 230k miles before a teenager with a license for less than a hr turned left of center and it got totaled. always motorcraft oil&filter and lucas.

I read the entire blog and quite amazed in your progress. keep up the good work and I will continue to follow its progress. the one thing i do recommend on a 5.0 or any ford motor at that, is a motorcraft oil filter. I had many older 5.0L(15 lincolns,12 mustangs)including my 89 lincoln that I just turned into a demolition derby car @343k miles.original motor.i did put a high volume oil pump in @80k to help provide more oil because of the large main bearings.seems to help prevent the thrust bearing from wearing premature. another one w/255k. I always used motorcraft oil and filter and a quart of lucas. I swear by the lucas too!

Anyway good luck!
Terry

Okay, lets get this engine back together
Finished starter motor

New crank seal in timing cover

Heres the timing cover bolted on, and you can just see the elusive oil pressure switch reinstalled

Another view of the cover and pump

And another showing timing marks

Oil pan on next and harmonic damper and pulley paint.

Re: Project 1990 country squire resto/modification

Now then, thinking forward to the air suspension. I'm going to need plenty of space above the wheels/tyres when the car goes down to the floor, so heres a mod I will do to the rear.
Hopefully the diagram will tell the story.

Front suspension will be shockwaves from airride technologies. I will modify the frame slightly when it is out to get it lower at the front.

Re: Project 1990 country squire resto/modification

Valve lapping in time.
Here's a first view of an inlet valve and the seat have i spent a few mins lapping it in

Now thats not a valve that has done 165k miles. These have been before.
Notice the milling marks on the head surface also. This has been skimmed before. No way am I going to risk having it skimmed again. This would be taking it too thin for the waterways. It checks out very well for flatness with no pitting or scoring at all.
Exhaust valve

Looking clean also. May have hit lucky with these heads!
Andy.

I'm in awe at your work.

Keep up the blog. I'd love to see this running after you put it back together.
