I have a problem with my 2006 Grand Marquis. When I try filling the tank, the pump keeps shutting off. It takes forever to fill the tank. I have the FFV engine and am pumping regular 87 octane gas. I tried two different stations so I know it's not the pump at a particular station.

Does anybody know what the problem might be?

Sounds like a fuel tank venting problem .Not sure on that car but there may be a vent valve fitted for the tank which if faulty will cause excessive back-pressure and the pump to cut out if faulty.

Check your fuel pump breaker, it is listed in the owners manual and will tell you which one. It will be under the hood at the main fuse block, or on the firewall. You are better to try switching it with one of the other relays of the same number. Turn on the key and you should hear the pump run then stop, you may have to remove the gas cap to hear the pump run.

Are you getting confused with the fuel pump on the car rather than the fuel pump at the gas station which the post refers to ??

Hello Jeff:
This is a common problem on '07 Mustangs, but I've never experienced it on a Panther. It's usually a vent problem. An easy solution is to just turn the station pump nozzle sideways until you get it fixed.

I tried that. Still didn't work. Maybe it wasn't sideways enough.

You know you have it right when people at the gas station look at you funny!
It's a vent or kinked filler hose problem. Google Mustang fuel fill problems. Some of the fixes apply to all cars. Good luck!
