Shifting problem (99 grand marquis)

Hello, I have a question....I got a 99 grand marquis when you shift to go into reverse, park, drive, etc. It always doesnt feel like it is in gear. The shifter feels loose on the steering colum. What can i do? Thanks

I would have one person sit in the car and work the shifter up and down through the gears and try to watch the shift linkage under the hood and down by the tranny. If everything seems fine with the linkage, it could be the transmission detents.

Word to the wise (though you probably know this already), if you get under the car MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE the car cannot roll and squish you, because if you take the car out of park without the engine running, every gear acts like neutral.

I have the problem with my 2000 grand marquis, any advice on how to adjust the shifter?
