Sleeping Driver Careens Into Police Car

Sheriff's Sergeant Not Injured
PORTLAND -- A patrol car was crushed early Monday after another driver fell asleep at the wheel.
A Multnomah County sheriff's sergeant pulled over a speeding Ford Explorer about 12:12 a.m. on Interstate 84 near 207th.
The sergeant saw headlights heading his way and assumed that it was his backup. But the Ford F-150 pickup kept coming and slammed into the cruiser, forcing it into the Explorer.
The police officer stepped out of the way and was not injured.
"Timing was everything on this one. Thirty seconds later he would have had the driver out to the first vehicle conducting tests. Thirty seconds before he was still behind the wheel of his police car. If those two situations had happened, he and the other driver would have been in serious trouble," according to the sheriff's office.
Witnesses said the pickup driver, 27-year-old Catherine Horlings, fell asleep. She was treated at the scene and released.
The Explorer driver was treated for minor injuries.
