Steam cleaning engine compartment

I saw one post that said, use a can or two of spray engine degreaser and wash off with warm water.

Doesn't anybody use steam cleaning anymore? When I had my shop many years back, we had a propane -ired steam cleaner. Spray on the degreaser, wait 10 minutes and then steam it. It's not like a pressure washer that forces water into whereever you don't want it. Work very well. Never really had any problems with this method.

Do any shops or detailers use steam anymore? Anybody using steam and have bad experiences?

Re: Steam cleaning engine compartment

We use the degreaser method because it's cheaper. They wouldn't go for the steam for safety reasons also.

The steam cleaners that has the Chimney with the coil inside that used diesel? The wash boy at a Dodge dealership I used to work at used them on some of the older trade in's. I've seem his use it on the paint. It would cut the tree sap fairly easy.

Re: Steam cleaning engine compartment

If not used properly they could do more damage than good .I rented out a back yard in the garage to a friend who was a used car dealer and he had a car cleaner who used to go mental with the steam cleaner in the engine bay causing havoc with electrics and occasionally clutches .
