Synthetic ATF-Waste of money?

08 GM with 60K. I want to do my first ATF change. Is it a waste to go to synthetic ATF? I would rather do my ATF change intervals at 60K and not every 30K (I think the manual doesn't require any interval - I might be wrong on this).

No towing. No hard driving. Generally putt-in to work 20 miles RT and 4- 1000 mile RT expressway runs per year.

PS-I saw an older post about pumping most of old fluid out though one of the cooler lines. This won't hurt the tranny? Please verify.

Thoughts?

Re: Synthetic ATF-Waste of money?

Hi XPlumber. Regular Mercon has been out of production and off the shelves for several years now, and has been replaced by Mercon V which is synthetic.

I recommend just dropping the pan and filter change instead of doing a flush via the lines. Being its been driven gently, I think that would be sufficient not to mention cheaper and safer. To flush using the lines you have to add back as you pump out being careful not to let it pump dry.

Be sure to use Mercon V and not a universal type of fluid that claims to be suitable for any transmission. You'll probably have to get it at your local auto parts store.

Re: Synthetic ATF-Waste of money?

Thanks greatly. I was leery of running the pump(s) dry if doing a pump out method. I'll just drop the pan, replace filter, button up and refill with Mercon V.
