Question Tranny screwed? Or simple fix?

My '88 CV has been acting up lately. First off, it feels way underpowered (under normal driving conditions, but picks up nice when I punch it), and it shifts at what seems to be the wrong times. It will shift from 1-2 normally, then from 2-3 too soon, meaning the rpms just drop down and the car lags. And I have to manually shift from 3rd to OD or else it revs up before it engages (I guess the clutches are slipping...?). So I just let off on the gas and shift like a standard. I have done some minor research about this TV Cable. I realize that the TV Cable (either the cable itself, or that plastic piece that is known to break) probably wouldn't effect the 3rd into OD, but I'm not too sure about how soon it shifts. Does anyone have any info/ pics of this piece that I would need to look into replacing if needed? I probably just need to get the AOD rebuilt, but would like to do any 'cheap fixes' first.

Thanks!,

Darren

Re: Tranny screwed? Or simple fix?

DO NOT DRIVE IT!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like the plastic TV bushing has failed, so your transmission is running at zero throttle pressure, which will cook it real fast. The failed bushing WILL affect the shift from 3-4.

Here's a link to an article that talks about the adjustment procedure for the cable. You'll find it directly under the throttle body, and there's a good chance that you'll see that cable has fallen off completely and is just hanging there. Replace the bushing, check the adjustment, and try it. If you haven't driven it too far, the transmission may still be okay.

The part number for the brass replacement bushing is F3SZ-7H303-B, and you'll have to go to your friendly local Ford dealership for it. Should be around 6 bucks or so. If they don't have it (seems to be kind of hit or miss these days whether they do or not), you can try a transmission shop, and they'll probably have it or be able to get it for you.

Good luck!
