Well looks like the end of my 192k m grand marquis...

I'm not 100% sure how hard or how big of a project this is but my transmission X-member rusted though

(as you can see my car has seen its share of mud recently)
I'm still driving it around (just not being too heavy on the throttle)

I got a quote from my mechanic and it was something around $250

does that sound right? and how hard of a job is this to do myself?

It's very easy other than the rust on the bolts. Remove one of the headers. Remove the trans mount bolts, raise the rear of the transmission by the pan, (use block of under the pan to protect it.) Then remove the rest attached to it. It will slide out. You can check for a good used one here. http://www.car-part.com/index.htm

I'll see if this is workable for me if not I might just end up getting a newer car (new job wrecks havoc on this car and my wallet - driving 150m per day)

if you were closer i would buy the car from you and fix it myself... problem to do this would be the 7 hour one way trip... hmmm... though i could get out there with a crossmember, pay for the car, fix it and drive home...

the crossmember is easy... just need to use a floor jack with a block of wood on it to lift the transmission...

then unbolt the bolts on each side along with the transmission mount that is another 2 nuts...

after that the old one will fall out easy since it is rusted on one side...

after it is out, slide the new one in place and rebolt the stuff.

might as well get a new trans mount since you will have it apart

you might have to unbolt the exhaust since it looks like you have duals to get them outta the way for clearance and make it easier to get the replacement crossmember in

87_Crown_Vic just reminded me about the crossmember. I mentiioned to remove one header but now that he mentioned it, I think I've pulled them by just lowering the transmission when you pull the crossmember back from the mount area to make room to spin it between the exhaust.

BTW 87_Crown_Vic if you want to work out a deal I am currently thinking about selling this car... I might knock off $100 for you coming out and being a member of this forum (and helping me at times) :-D
