Transmission questions

I've been trying with limited success to figure out which transmission I have in my car and what the difference is between all the 70/75/W/E designations. Several people have suggested I JMOD the car but none of them have a conclusive answer on how to do this or if even what model years it can be done on. Anyone who can help out an ignorant soul would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Transmission questions

When it comes to questions about the J-mod, AKA-Rizzo on crownvic.net (he may also be a member here but IDK) is the man to ask. But I do believe that 2005's had the 4R70E. Also I think (don't quote me on this) that the procedure is the same from the AODE - 4R75w

here's a nice write-up from the Thunderbird & Cougar Club of America
VALVE BODY MODIFICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Re: Transmission questions

Here is the kit for you:

Factory Tech Transmission Performance 2001-Up Ford 4R70W and 4R75E "C" Plate (Transmission & Driveline - Shift Kits & Valve Bodies) at Truck Hownd

As stated, you want the "C" Plate.

This is essentially a JMOD already done for you.

Re: Transmission questions

Wow, thanks for all the great info guys. It looks like the modification is way over my head as far as auto maintenance goes. If I end up doing it someone with the proper skill set will definitely have to be involved!

Even a skilled technician can do it for pretty cheap. If you buy a factory tech C-plate kit, it literally only requires a pan and filter drop and everything is right there in the valve body. No opening up of the transmission is required!

Good Luck!

Re: Transmission questions

Here is the second writeup I was looking for before if you're still considering it, this writeup is an updated and more detailed version of the one I linked to earlier.
