I have a '97 C.V. with a few things going on, and was wondering if anyone has run across any of these before and has successfully resolved them. It is a 4.6l, non-interceptor, auto tranny. Right now, I've just failed the Illinois Emmissions test only because of 0171 and 0174 codes (lean on banks a+b). Under hard acceleration, the car accerates live a GEO Metro....no power at all. If I give it 50% throttle, it actually moves faster. In the winter, she won't run on her own for a good 5 minutes. If the heater (blower motor) is on, she surges from about 800rpm to about 1200rpm every 5 seconds. I don't know if these are all related, or seperate issues. I was standing in back of a guy at a parts store today, and he had a Grand Marquis with the same code and lack of power. I didn't get a chance to talk to him, but it sounds like this may be a common thing. Any help would be great. I want to get her running good.....there is nothing like driving a big car on the highway.

Funny you should ask about this at this time...

Just yesterday I finally killed the same two codes you mentioned..

After replacing the O2 sensors, checking every vac hose, cleaning the throttle body, cleaning the MAF sensor I finally got my power back, gas milage back to normal and got that dang check engine light to stay off.

The magic bullet for me on my 1997 was just replacing the MAF sensor...

You may have more than one thing going on buy the MAF would be high on my list if I were you...

You also may need to clean the ERG and grooves under/behind it or replace it all together...

Clean out the gook from your throttle body...Use only TB cleaner...

You also may need to clean or replace the AIC...

Check every hose one by one for pin hole or larger leaks...

Thanks for the tips....I changed the MAF the other day, and no change so far. I'll keep plugging away........
