I've never worked on a Ford before and a buddy brought this car to me because it wouldn't idle. It's got an obvious vacuum leak but after looking I noticed there's a large hole behind the intake manifold next to the heater outlet that looks like a coolant passage. There's gasket there and it looks like there was supposed to be something cast into the manifold. I'm trying to upload a picture but I'm new to this forum so bearwith me
It is indeed a 4.6. I'm uploading a video to YouTube I'll have a link once it finishes

I thought I'd add that it does look like a coolant part. Doesn't affect the vacuum system right? Are there any common giant vacuum leaks that come from that general area?
63 views and nobody can tell me anything? I appreciate your response 85ltd. I just need a little more info such as what I need to make this work. Also the vacuum question.
I meant to respond to this last night but forgot. I saw the vid on my phone and couldnt really tell what it was but Ill look again here in a bit. I have an 02 mustang gt with a 4.6 I can use as reference.
As far as a vac leak, if the manifold broke the nipple cleanly off then no it wouldnt cause a vac leak but since the 4.6 2v intake is plastic it can take more pieces with it. Also check the pcv valve while youre there. I somehow snapped mine on my other 00 gt and it wouldnt idle. And they can cause a lot of other issues so really Id just replace it.
Its hard to tell still but it looks like that the coolant line from the egr cooler isnt bolted in. It also looks like the vac hose directly on the back of the plenum doesnt have a hose on it but I cant tell for sure.
Hi. From the picture, the flange that the hose is connected to appears to have at least one bolt removed from the "top" as it appears in the picture. Does that hose go to the heater valve/core? Can you get a better picture of the flange toward the front? I looked at my engine and can't find anything like that but mine is a 2007 MGM.
By the way, what year and car is this on?
+1 to what bill said. It looks like that flange isnt connected. Im guessing its a 92-98ish crown vic? I see it has a mechanical fan and coil packs so its definitely an older crown vic. That being said, Im not very familiar with those older models but it looks like the egr valve is remote mounted and thats the egr cooler line. My guess is that its the flange that connects the egr cooler to the heater core. The other line has the coolant nipple I was reffering to.
Both of my 4.6 2v's, mind you they were both mustangs so things are slightly different, and both have the egr valve mounted to the upper intake plenum.
Also did it just die and now it wont idle? Will it start but immediately die? Im thinking its totally unrelated and may be the fuel pump.
The car is a 94 mercury grand marquis and most of the questions I don't have answers to since this is the condition it was in when purchased. However I will do what I can. As far as a bolt being missing there is definitely one of those missing but it almost looks like the manifold is wrong. Everything I've read says it should have a plastic manifold but it's aluminum. Part no rf-f5ae-9425-cb. It looks like the manifold should have been cast with more surface area there for the heater outlet. The intake gasket surrounds what appears to be a water jacket. The egr cooler idea sounds like it might be a winner considering there's a massive vacuum leak. And there's definitely some stuff on this motor that's unoriginal. The video is concentrated on the rear passenger side of the motor. Once it's warmed up it will idle but it's far from smooth. It only won't idle while it's cold then it will die occasionally. Can someone tell me how to post pictures? I'll take a picture of whatever you want (almost lol). Is there some sort of egr coolant delete? Because it doesn't seem to leak coolant or overheat at all.
Hmm that part number doesnt turn up anything. The intake is plastic with some aluminum parts like the water inlet and outlet and front coolant crossover. Are you using the mobile site?
Doesn't idle well. Basically it will start right up, but you have to keep it running till it's had a chance to warm a bit. Then afterwards it just gallops. The manifold it most Certainly all aluminum. There's another one that came in the trunk with it. Wouldn't surprise me if it's been changed. I don't think everything is all original with the car.
What coolant nipple comes with the Bullitt manifold. Does anyone have a picture of it? Are you 100% sure that it is the only all aluminum manifold. I will take some pictures of the manifold once I get home. I really need to get this all buttoned up soon. It's taking up precious space in my driveway that could be more jobs.
The only coolant nipples Ive seen on these intakes are not bolt on like yours but a piece of metal that a coolant hose sits on and is clamped on. I have no experience with the npi intakes so maybe theyre different but I know they were all plastic.
Have you tried to unplug the maf while its running to see if the idle changes? Have you pulled codes?
Hmm I didnt know that but its good to know thanks! It makes sense because of the placement of the plenum it looks like a carb'd 302 intake so it was probably modeled off that then changed to plastic for cost saving reasons.
