What is the purpose of the little nubs on the brake pads (2003 MGM)

I'll try to get a picture as soon as I can but if you've ever done brakes you know what I'm talking about. There are two little nubs on the back of the brake pads that make the caliper really hard to slide off because the pistons press around the nub. I had to use a screwdriver to compress the piston just a bit in order to slide the caliper off over these damn little nubs.

Is there an easier/proper way to do this? What do these little things do?

If there is rotor wear and the caliper wont slide off, I use a screwdriver to pry/slide the caliper outwards which compresses the piston. Those nubs are there (I guess) so the pad won't move up or down

Hi andrew61987.
They are there to prevent the piston from rotating.
Used mainly on rear brakes with a parking brake built in, but not always. The piston is screwed onto a coarse threaded rod. As the piston moves out the threaded rod rotates and keeps the piston and pad close to the rotor. If you know what I mean!

Andy.
