yes jbon the gauge that you see in the dash gets its own sender and would not cause the engine to run rich no matter what reading it has.
a good test is to remove the rad cap and start the engine from cold and watch to see if it rises as the water temp rises if you cant stick your finger in the water (too hot) but the dash is showing the engine is cold then that is bad but if you have no thermostat at all or if it is stuck open your coolant temp will never reach operating temp.
your coolant temp should be around 195 F when the engine is at operating temp.
oh and i only get about 86 km to 21 ltrs of fewl.
