2004 f150 tapping sound.

Hi I am new to the forum. I have a 2004 f150 4.7 that I purchased from an auction. It looked great when I bought it however I have already had the trans rebuilt on it. The odometer says it has 77k miles on it. I recently changed the oil using ford motor craft synthetic oil. I begain to hear a tapping sound the next day and changed the oil to Mobil 1. The tapping sound continued. It sounds like a valve tapping but my mechanic said it sounds like the timing chain guide. However he did not sound very sure and stated it would cost 1200 bucks to rip everything apart to find out for sure. Anyone have any other educted guesses or suggestions? Thanks.

Re: 2004 f150 tapping sound.

I'm not sure if you have figured out what your problem is with your engine, but I have an 04 F150 5.4 3v engine also, and mine ticks like a small diesel engine. The tick is actually the Camshaft Phazer. These are a variable cam timing engine, and when the phazers don't work properly they will tick or knock. In my town it is $800.00 per head to have them changed.

Try using a Synthetic Oil Stablizer ("Lucas" brand works well) 1 qt. to 5 qts. oil. The only thing Synthetic Oil doesn't do well by itself, is film to hot metal surfaces. "Saving the World....One Ford Truck at a Time!"
