300 -6cyl. starter problems - Ford Forums

I am having starter probs. on my 1984 F150, starter got noisy but I figured that was just the mud and sand from being in the woods of Florida. Truck wouldn't start, pulled starter and nose cone was broke off. Took back to Autozone for replacement and this one was noisy from the install, took back and upgraded to the lifetime one. Put it on and started right up very little noise. Next day noisy and then not starting, took off later and nose cone was broke off. Flywheel doesn't look too bad, some teeth show wear, but something has to be wrong. Help need ideas.

Was any other work done on the starter or was it checked out when the nose cone was replaced?. Is it noisy when starting or after the engine is running?.

I'm thinking that maybe the starter isn't disengaging properly after the engine has fired up and is getting damaged that way because unless something is out of line then the nose cone shouldn't be snapping off.

You may need to get the starter checked out further and the starter pinion/clutch checked out and the bearings in the starter also.

I am thinking that it must not be disengaging all the time. I didn't do anything but pull it off and put the one on from Autozone. It sounded like it was full of sand or something, that is why I took it back. Guess I am gonna just have to pull it apart and maybe replace the flywheel, need to put a clutch in it before next hunting season anyway.

hi there stumpy: what did you figure out with this problem??? we are having a starting problem here too. Got us all stumped! Let me know how you made out with this, perhaps it could lead us to some ideas on this one!
