302 gapping 87' - 95's. - Ford Forums

96' starts OBD II so I didn't look past 95', It appears to have changed in 92 but anyway, the stock gap went from .044 to .054 however the part #'s for plugs, distributors, coils, Ign. Cntrl. Mod.s & pick ups are the same as per Motorcraft Catalog 87'-95' 302 ci N type engines. So why doesn't my 87' call for .054 stock gaping? I'd be happy as a pig in what ever the heck their happiest in if I was able to run a .054 gap w/ the stock Ign. sys. as it appears 95's are and according to Motorcraft, the same Ign. parts as my 87's!!! Seems like this could be an official WTF. If it isn't it aught to be. Any thoughts?

Not too sure on this one, but maybe it has to do with the differences in the emissions systems between those years. The 87 likely had a smog pump while the 92 doesn't. Those coils are strong, enough to clear the extra gap anyways. I personally would try the different gap, and the check the plugs at the next oil change to check for fouling or lean scorching.
