biggrin 460 help

ok hi i am new to this site. I have a 1986 460 that i pulled out of a F250 of the same year. I am going to swap this engine into a 1984 F250 i allready have the trans and transfer case for the swap. The engine had both heads cracked and i got some heads from pick and pull but they were cracked also. I am having a hard time finding heads for this engine. I want heads from the 80's so they will be the same chamber size and i like the big valves. But can not find any. Is there any source for these heads or does some one have some they want to sell. Also why can you not use 88 and new heads on these engines what is the diffrence. And are there good earlyer heads 70's? all the ones i have seen are small valve and small chambered. Also could some one explan to me the date codes on heads? Thanks alot

Nick

Ford changed the production method on these head's in the late 80's as a cost reduction. Any early 80's head's will work fine. If you were doing a complete rebuild I would suggest using 429's the held up much better. The pre-1980 head's were smaller chamber and used a dish piston.
FORD LETTERING CODE:
B 1950's
C 1960'S
D 1970'S
E 1980'S
In the 1990's Ford decided to go with the international coding method and are nearly impossible to decode.
In the early version you can see the simplicity thus: C6 transmission production build 1966, E40D transmission production build 1984. That is not to say it was only used in that year, but it was the first year in production.
