70 ford f-100 problems

Can anyone help with some trouble shooting on my truck .When I pull the positive cable off the battery the truck dies I was told that it was the alternator was bad so I installed a new one, also voltage regulator ,solenoid ,ignition coil, new battery, checked the wires that go to alternator to the voltage regulator and cillinoid everything appears to be fine .the guy at autozone told me that the starter may be grounding it self out and causing truck to die.Is this true???I've tried everything I could think of .I stuck on what to do I also check the fuses.and I installed new battery terminals `just to be safe .....please someone help....

Typically this means the alt. isn't putting out proper voltage. New doesn't mean it's good. Double check wiring, the alt. and voltage reg.

Re: 70 ford f-100 problems

First off NEVER EVER remove the battery cable while the engine is a running.
You will DESTROY the alternator diodes
You have probably done some damage already

To check charging ..put a multimeter on the battery cable connections and REV the engine up.
The Voltage regulator is what kicks into increase amperage from the alternator and that requires the engine to be at least 800 RPM to show up as charging.

This pull the battery cable off is from the OLD DAYS when they used Generators (DC current) for charging. It was done to EXCITE the generator to start generating power.

FTE is an excellent forum for Ford trucks, alot of sharp people over there. They can answer about any question if they are given adaquate info. I am always unsure whether or not we can mention another site whithout getting clobbered over the head. (even though I seen you direct someone to another site last week )
