I personally can't stand HID headlights and can't wait until the legislation to outlaw them passes!! Most of the people wanting to do the conversion or who pick up the bright white lights only want the brighter light to "look cool" rather than actually wanting to have more light for safer night driving.
The high intensity discharge lights may help the driver of the vehicle see a little better, but they sure do blind oncoming traffic. Is that considered safer?
To answer your question, I've seen numerous HID conversion kits on the market and the prices have come down quite a bit but they're still not cheap. The kits are pretty easy to install and anyone with a little basic electrical experience can install it. A net search will give you a lot of options.
