Automatic Hubs 1993

Exactly [u]how do automatic hubs work? My hubs on 1993 F150 don't appear to have any broken parts in them. Front drive shaft and axle shafts turn, but wheels don't lock up. The shop manual doesn't explain how the hubs work, nor does it have a fully exploded view of the hubs.
Thanks.
