cam for my truck - Ford Forums

ok, i have been thinking of putting a cam in my truck for some added power. my truck is a '94 Ford F-350 with the 7.5L(460ci)V8. there are a few cams that i have been looking at. here they are.
-comp XE256H-14 256/268 adv. dur. 212/219 @ .050" 114' lobe seperation
-comp 270H 270/270 adv. dur. 224/224 @ .050" 110' lobe seperation
-comp X4262H 262/270 adv. dur. 218/226 @ .050" 111' lobe seperation
-crane H-260-2 260/272 adv. dur. 204/216 @ .050" 112' lobe seperation

which of these cams would any of you recommend for a daily driver that sees a little towing and hauling. i dont care about idle quality but i do care about being able to retain my stock converter. the engine is stock but has a single 3" flowmaster cat back(might go to headers soon too). any and all suggestions will be helpful.

well speedemon you have a nice choice for your cams i run a comp cam right now and also have a bit bigger comp cam in my garage waiting to be put in.
i have also used crane cams as well and they perform pretty good.
let me look in a few of my books and i will get right back i should be able to give you a few pointers toward a cam choice.

well the crane cam is on the smaller side of the range you selected and if you are like everyone else you want to get as much gain as possible so i would lean towards the comp X4262H.
it is an extreme energy cam with a pretty good offset between intake and exhaust and with the extra duration of the exhaust you should see and feel a strong gain over the stock cam.

ok im back, i was interupted.
that comp cam is the biggest i would recommend because anything bigger will want to see a better intake,gears and headers.
the 270H will give you a little more duration and lift on the intake side but not as much on the exhaust as the 4262 and as you get into the bigger cams you will lose the bottom end power.
the X4262H will work well with all your current parts and should even help with the usually restrictive exhaust.

ok, thanks for the help. but i have one last question. will that cam work with a stock computer? otherwise, would i have to have a chip made to work with it? i dont know a lot about my trucks copmputer but i do know that more power would be nice.

I'm not sure but are the 94s speed density? Once again 351, will he see much effect with a cam swap with speed Density. I'm not sure he will

ya, from what i hear the newer 460's are speed density. i learned a little about it a while back when i was thinking of turning my truck into a TT460 project but i got quite a bit of negative feedback on it and not too much help so i figured forget it. also, with a 5000rpm capability, would the computer and fuel system be able to handle that as the highest rpm i know of my truck going to is about 4500, and thats pure wheelspin in the rain, it never gets above that. thanks again.
