I live in California and have a 1984 F150 Shortbed Stepside.

It's got a 5.0L V8 and I've got a couple of carb problems so would appreciate any help or input.

First of all, the carb is the wrong one. The guy before me needed a new carb so bought a cheap, incorrect item and got his friend at a repair shop to make it work. I remember the repair shop having a hard time getting the trucked smogged.

I think this was also due to an incorrect exhaust being fitted. I had the correct exhaust fitted last week and now want to address the carb problem.

I want to have the incorrect carb removed and have the correct item fitted. I was also thinking about fitting a 4 barrel carb instead of the original 2 barrel.

I called a carb place but they said they wouldn't do "Mickey Mouse" repairs like that and said I should go to a Smog Repair place. I pointed out that the "Mickey Mouse" repairs had already been done and I'm trying to get the proper work done but that didn't cut any ice.

The questions I have are as follows:

1. What is the problem with having an incorrect carb removed and the
correct item fitted?

2. Could I have a new manifold and 4 barrel carb fitted legally?

3. If I cant, who would be the best people to take the truck to in order to
get the correct 2 barrel carb fitted?

Any advice or input will be greatly appreciated.

There shouldn't be ANY problem with replacing the current carb with the correct one. I'm sure they didn't do any tooling or other modification that whould hamper putting an original back on. As far as going to 4 Bbl, I don't know CA law. Here in LA, it's local tradition to replace a 2 Bbl with a 4 Bbl or 3 2Bbls as far as that goes. My guess is that the place you took it to doesn't understand what they're doing. They know what they've been taught and nothing more. Try a couple other places, and I'm sure you'll find somebody that wants your $. Look for somebody with some experience .
