My emergency brake is stuck in the engaged position, how do I release it? Other symptoms: when I push on the e brake pedal it feels "spongy" and does not feel like it is engaging (won't stay in position, comes back up), and pulling on the brake release does nothing.

I want to replace the cable but I'm not sure how to get it off the rear brake while it is engaged. Should I just cut it? Will that release it, or make it harder to repair?

My truck is a 92 f 150 nite series with a 5.0 liter 5 speed, 6 inch lift and 35 inch tires. I'm new at doing the repairs myself so please don't think anything is too obvious to mention.

E-Brake cables are probably seized. I have replaced many.
