i have a 1997 ford f-150 4 wheeldrive with a 4.6 engine,
i bought the truck new ,at 50,000 it started missing real bad ,,,i took it to a garage and they did all kinds of work ,fuel flush,plentum gasket,tuneup,you name it . didnt work and cost a bundle, took it to a ford garage and he runs tests and comes up with 3cyl misfire ,,he put a sparkplug wire on it and that worked ,,,,for about 6 months,,now it started about a week ago missing bad again,,, anyone had that trouble like this,,,, im getting fed up with it ,any advice guys?

Got a 99 F150 4x4 with the 4.6 with 97k mi...never had this problem...BUT my brother-in-law has a 97 F150 4 x 4 with the 5.4 that had a very similar sounding problem at about 70k mi. He said that there was a vacuum leak near the rear of the engine...some little plastic elbow went bad. He replaced it, and hasn't had that problem again...sounds like another "should have been recalled" item. I have had several problems (all Fords) over the years where I bring it into the shop, and they say...yeah, they made this wrong such and such a way...just replace it with this re-designed one, and off you go.

Check for a vacuum leak near the back of the engine, and hope you find the problem.

thanks ill check again ,ive had it on numerous diagnostic reader tools and they none detect anything other than 3 cyl.back misfire .but now that you mentioned it i had a mercury villager that had a vacume leak,a little hose in back of the throttle bottle hardened and fell to pieces ,but it didnt make it miss just made the check engine light come on.

[took it to a ford garage ,,295 bucks for wires and plugs fixed it ,,runs like new .
