F-150 Not sifting into park, need help!

I have heard that in the cold and the winter there is some problems with sifting into park, but its 50 out and i cant sift into park. i came home from work this afternoon, and when i thought i put it in park in went in reverse. but if i press the brake i can take my keys out, but not start it. so i looked by the drivers side of the trany and there is a hose/wire running to a piston and if i move that piston i can put it into park. Whats not making it go into park on its own?
