Fast idle problem

92 F150 5.0L

Posting for a friend
At startup the engine fast idles for 15-20 seconds and kick down to idle speed and stalls.( Only stalls when the engine is started cold.Have to keep the foot on the gas for 5 min til the engine warms up.) Turn the key and engine starts at idle speed and runs.

He brought it to a garage. They changed the alt.motor. Tuneup and blocked off the EGR port with metal plate.

Now the truck starts the same but less stalling.

I change the thottle postion sensor and coolant temp. sensor. The truck still starts the same.

Anyone know how to get the fast idle back?

The shop mechanic said "so the engine would run smoother and he doesn't need it." He did that last after changing the alt. and tuneup.

OK. I removed the metal plate blocking the port. Still no fast idle. Anyone know how I can get the fast idle back?

The truck use to fast idle (high RPM) for 3-5 min. at cold starts. Now 15-20 sec.at most and then drops down to normal idle speed. At that point the engine sometimes stalls because it's still cold.

Sorry.I don't have a tachometer. My best guest would be 2000-2500rpm when starting from cold for 15-20 seconds then drops down to idle speed about 700 rpm.
I'll check with my friends for a tach.So I can give you the exact rpm

Re: Fast idle problem

try coolant sensor. It tells the ecu the ebgine is hot when its cold or vice versa.
also does it have a map sensor .
both will cause this problem
