fuel gauge not working

I have a 1992 F-150 with duel gas tanks. The fuel gauge does not work on either tank. I reset the odometer to 0 each time I fill up and when I get to about 260 miles I know I have to switch tanks and fillup again. What would cause the gauge to not work on either tank. I know it has to be something common to both tanks?

Is this the only gauge not working? If so it could be a defective guage. Have you checked your fuse's? If the truck has been put through rough service( Off- Road) perhap's there has been some wiring damage.
I believe on the 92's there's a small fielding relay attached to the printed circuit at the back of the cluster, this may need replacing.
Don't know if this has been of any help, but it may point you in the right direction.

Re: fuel gauge not working

i have to agree with big1 that it might be a wire problem or simply the gauge has gone bad because really that is the only common thing for both tanks.

Re: fuel gauge not working

I've got a '85 F100 4X4 with dual petrol tanks. My fuel gauge doesn't work either. I found out that they use a combined in-tank furl pump & sender unit. The pumps seem to work forever, but the sender units do break down. The only way to fix them is to replace the whole fuel pump sender unit as the sender unit is not a separate part. I do beleive that you can get them reconditioned as new from Ford they are $600 Australian each ($350 US). I hope this helps. :s6:
