Hi all,

Looking for a little help with my 1990 F-150. I believe it has the AOD tranny (OD,D,1 on the column). I also have the 5.0L engine. I purchased it just a couple weeks ago with only 77K miles.

This is a little hard to decribe. As I am accelerating, the truck shifts, but it seems to lug right after the shift, resulting in a slight 'rough or jarring' shift. The best 'non-technical' way to describe it is it seems to 'fall off' after each shift. It is much more noticable when I am easy on the throttle. So if I am pushing it hard, it doesn't seem to bee as rough. But it doesn't 'slide' into the next gear.

The transmission fluid was changed about 5K miles ago. I assume the filter was too. Last weekend, I checked the fluid and it was too high, so I pulled about a 1/3 pint out of the tranny. The fluid looked good; clear red color and didn't stink.

Could this be engine related? Perhaps fuel filter?

Update:

I took the truck out during lunch and tried to pay more attention to the shifts. It seems to get a 'kick in the rear' right as its shifting. So maybe there isn't a 'drop off' after the shift, or maybe it's a combination of a surge and a drop. ???

I also noted that there was at least one 'normal shift, where it changed from (I think) first to second perfectly fine.

Check the fluid again. Make sure it is the right amount. It sounds like a low fluid prob. I kno wyou said it was fine. But double check it. The filter could be clogged, if it was not changed. You can always replace it and the fluid once again. There could be a problem internally, but make sure the fluid is up to level.

Ok, I'll check the fluid when I get home from work. It was doing this before I pulled the excess fluid so I'm thinking it may not be a fluid level problem.

I'm thinking I may change the fluid and filter so I know it has been done.

I've also found references to the throttle valve linkage and bushing issues. Need to crawl under it this weekend to investigate.

Checked the fluid again after work on Friday and it was fine. Did some work on it over the weekend, including new shocks. The new shocks improved the feel of the shifting, removing a lot of the 'clunks', but it still isn't smooth.
